The London Borough of Southwark is located Southwest of London City airport a distance of 9 miles that would take around 30 minutes by taxi via the A1011. It is located in Southeast London and forms part of inner London, it has a population of 288,700 according to 2011 statistics.

The borough has a long history with excavations of Roman artefacts at Southwark town and the remains of houses and wall paintings and there were Roman foundations of the first London Bridge. In Anglo-Saxon times it appears to have been a centre of local government in Surrey and was known as Suthringa Geweorc and the borough had much importance in these times. After the Norman conquest this seems to have declined and William the Conquerer had burned the town in 1066. From the 14th Century it was characterised by being a place for entertainment having a red light district but also a fashionable for the residence of great men and from the 16th century was more reputed for its inns and hostels for travellers.

The area attracts many visitors and tourists and has some of Londons most famous sites within its boundaries. Such places include Shakespeares Globe Theatre, Southwark Cathedral, the Design Museum, the Golden Hinde, Winston Churchills Britain at War Experience, Tower Bridge and the Fashion and Textile Museum. There are more than 130 such green areas in the borough with the main ones being Belair Park, Burgess Park, Southwark Park and Sydenham Hill Wood.
